The Musical Theatre of the RK was established in 1955. It is in the building designed by a famous architect S.Brodsky. The fronton and the coating of the theatre are decorated with sculptures by a famous Russian sculptor S.T.Konenkov. On November 5, the Musical Theatre opened its first season with a musical comedy by I.Dunaevsky.

Within 50 years the theatre has represented performances of various genres. They have been classical and contemporary musical comedies, musicals, operas and ballets. A lot of pieces of music by Karelian composers were performed at the theatre.

The first Karelian ballet “Sampo” put on the stage in 1959 made the theatre famous. In 1987, composer G.Sinisalo, choreographer I.Smirnov, who were the authors of the ballet, and the leading ballet dancers became laureates of the M.I.Glinka Russian state prize.

In 2006-2009, the theatre building was reconstructed. At the same time the vocal and ballet companies, the chorus and orchestra were formed.

At present, the Musical Theatre of the RK is the most important theatre ground in Karelia. It has the most up-to-date equipment.

The audience space has 607 seats and there are about 300 performing artists, creative specialists and technical specialists in the repertory company.

The repertoire of the Theatre is made up of operas and ballets. Such operas as “La Traviata” by G.Verdi, “Karmen” by J.Bizet, “Evgeny Onegin” by P.I.Tchaikovsky and such ballets as “Nutcracker” by P.I.Tchaikovsky, “Romeo and Juliet” by S.Prokofiev, “Korsar” by A.Adan, an international project «Stravinsky’ opuses», “The Bat” operetta by I.Strauss are very popular with the public.
