The “Polar Odysseus” Maritime Club was established in Petrozavodsk in 1978. Within more than three decades the club members have gone on several expeditions by ancient genuine Pomor boats replicas such as a “koch” or a “lodya”. The club members were the first voyagers in the former USSR and later in Russia who went on unique experimental expeditions to the northern and southern seas of the World Ocean. In 1994, with the support of the Karelian authorities, a Maritime Historical and Cultural Center (MHCC) was established. The “Polar Odysseus” Maritime Museum was opened at the Center in 1996. The first open air museum display became available for the visitors to the Museum on the day of the 300th anniversary of the Russian Fleet. One can see a pomor lodya called “Nikolaos the Wonderworker” which every year takes part in the most famous European maritime festivals, a koch called “Pomor” and a lodya called “Love”. The visitors can watch the process of a jackass brig construction as well. The “Polar Odysseus” Maritime Museum is directed by Victor Leonidovich Dmitriev.
