18.09—12.10.2008 — III International Exhibition “Aquabiennale”

III International Exhibition of watercolors “Aquabiennale” is a significant event in cultural life of the capital of the Republic of Karelia. This project did not emerge out of blue sky. An active interest to this sphere of fine arts has been demonstrated here for many years by success of Karelian artists in watercolor exhibitions abroad and at regular republican exhibitions “Watercolor Rains” that were held from 1998 to 2002. The latter were initiated by enthusiast aquarellists Alexander Kashtanov and Georgii Ivanov. In 2004, the City Exhibition Hall of Petrozavodsk launched a new project by facilitating the 1 st international “Aquabiennale” and inviting those artists from Russia and other countries, for whom watercolor is of special interest as a way of perceiving surrounding reality and means for expressing their world outlook. Despite active dissemination of innovative forms and technologies in the area of visual arts, expressive features of watercolors — that have been known since times unmemorable — are still popular.

“Aquabiennale” project has existed for 6 years already in Karelia and it is aimed at supporting watercolor art and assisting its further development. Its goal is to encourage dissemination of the interest to this type of art not only in Petrozavodsk, but outside its boundaries; and the main thing is to study its state of art and possibilities and future prospects for combining traditional techniques of painting and modern artistic thinking.

In 2008, 95 and 239 authors participated in the 3 rd International “Aquabiennale” who presented their works to the jury. The exhibition incorporated the works by the artists from China, Lithuania, Turkey, Belarus, Germany, the USA and Finland, as well as from almost all regions of Russia, including Novosibirks, Ekaterinburg, Omsk, Suzdal, Archangelsk, Perm, St. Petersburg, Nizhnii Novgorod, Magnitogorsk, Ufa, Sterlitamak, Tumen, Vladimir, Velikij Novgorod, Belgorod, Severomorsk, Vladivostok, Ivanovo, Cherepovets, Severodvinsk, Kurgan, Solnechnogorsk, Kamensk-Uralsk, Moscow, Orsk, Staryi Oskol, Rostov on Don, Ozersk and Petrozavodsk.
